Collection Maintenance Volunteer

Reports To: Volunteer Program Coordinator, may receive direction from Englewood Public Library staff.

Summary: Organize and straighten bookshelves, sort materials on carts for shelving, shelving, item search lists, shelf reading, and other collection-focused tasks.

Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week, with a maximum of 6 hours per week. Schedule will vary based on volunteer availability and Library needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to organize materials in alphabetical and numerical order. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System is helpful, but not required. Ability to interact with patrons and work effectively and cooperatively with library staff is necessary.

Qualifications: Must be 18 years old and over. Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time and perform lifting and shelving of materials while standing, stooping, and/or bending. Must be able to push/pull a book cart back and forth within the Library.

Library Beautification Volunteer

Reports To: Volunteer Program Coordinator, may receive direction from Englewood Public Library staff.

Summary: Dust and clean shelves, fill displays, pull and clean some damaged items, and other tasks that make the library feel cleaner and more beautiful.

Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week, with a maximum of 6 hours per week. Schedule will vary based on volunteer availability and Library needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to effectively clean surfaces and items with provided materials including but not limited to gloves, rags, and face masks. Ability to interact with patrons and work effectively and cooperatively with library staff is necessary.

Qualifications: Must be 18 years old and over. Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time and perform lifting and shelving of materials while standing, stooping, and/or bending. Must be able to push/pull a book cart back and forth within the Library.

I’m interested in volunteering! How do I apply?

We’re thrilled that you want to volunteer with us. To begin, take a look at the volunteer job descriptions. Once you’ve decided on the kind of volunteering you’re interested in, submit an application here. Every application to volunteer will be reviewed by the Volunteer Team. If there’s a good match, you will be contacted to schedule an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.

What are you looking for in a volunteer?

Each volunteer position has a job description with particular traits and skills we’re looking for. In general, candidates should have the ability to accurately alphabetize and use numerical order, including decimals. Candidates should be able to follow multi-step written and/or verbal directions, and to carry out tasks with little to no supervision once trained. Strong short- and long-term memory are a must, as is the ability to interact professionally with patrons, and work effectively and cooperatively with library staff. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Please see the specific volunteer descriptions above for more position-specific details.

What is the time commitment?

Different volunteers will have different time expectations, but the basic expectation is two hours a week. For program-specific volunteers, hours may fluctuate weekly based on program frequency or special events. Scheduling will be discussed in more detail during the interview process.

I have court ordered community service. Can I satisfy this requirement at the Englewood Public Library?

Can I volunteer with children or teens?

Our volunteer program supports general library functions, such as circulation, and adult programming. We do not have placements for volunteers involving children or teen programming, story times, or services.
