City of Englewood, Colorado
Home MenuCity Council Vacancy
Two current council members are candidates in the mayoral race, which will automatically result in a vacancy for either the District 1 or At-Large seat. In accordance with the City Charter, in the event of a vacancy, the remaining council members shall appoint a duly qualified individual to fill the position by a supermajority vote (five out of six members) within 30 days. If no appointment is made within that period, the vacancy shall be filled by a special election.
The city will begin soliciting applications from interested residents starting November 5. Once the election results are certified, interviews will be conducted with select qualified applicants.
The vacant seat (District 1 or At-Large) will not be identified until the election results are certified on November 25; therefore, the city is soliciting all qualified candidates throughout Englewood.
Candidate Qualifications
At the time of the election, a candidate must be a citizen of the United States, be 25 years of age or older and a registered elector of the city for at least one year immediately preceding the election. Council members elected by districts must also be residents and registered electors of their districts. Candidates are required to sign an affidavit as to qualifications. No council member shall hold any other public office or employment for which compensation is paid from any municipality.

How the Vacancy Will Be Filled

- Appointment Process: The remaining six council members have 30 days from the date of the vacancy (December 1) to appoint a new member. This appointment requires a supermajority approval (five out of the six members). If appointed, this candidate will serve until the next general municipal election in 2027.
- Special Election Process: If council does not make an appointment by a supermajority approval within the 30-day period, a special election will be called to fill the seat.
