Street Sweeping

Street Sweeping Program

Street Sweeper

Street sweeping not only makes the streets cleaner, it is an important part of storm water pollution prevention. It prevents unwanted materials from flowing into the storm drains and polluting our water system and causing backups and flooding.

When weather conditions permit, we will conduct Street Sweeping operations beginning in the Spring (beginning April) throughout the Fall (October).

For more information on the program, please call the Public Works Department at 303-762-2520.

Sweeping Schedule

The city is divided into four sweeping zones and sweeps one zone starting every Monday, weather permitting. If we are unable to sweep on Monday, the crew will begin sweeping the following day.

  • Zone 1 - First full week of April, June, August and October
  • Zone 2 - Second full week of April, June, August and October
  • Zone 3 - Third full week of April, June, August and October
  • Zone 4 - Fourth full week of April, June, August and October

Whenever possible, we encourage residents to park in their driveways on street sweeping days to allow crews to clean the street thoroughly. If driveway parking isn’t an option, here’s a general guideline:

  • Street sweepers clean Avenues on Mondays and Wednesdays.
On these days, please avoid parking on Avenues and use nearby Streets instead.
  • Street sweepers clean Streets on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
On those days, please avoid parking on Streets and park on nearby Avenues if possible.

If a vehicle isn’t moved, sweepers will do their best to clean around it, but moving your car helps ensure the entire street is swept effectively.

Arterials and Major Collector streets will be swept six times a year, approximately once every other month. During winter months, the goal is to sweep the snowplow route streets within four days after a snowstorm ends, depending on how fast the snow melts. Extremely cold weather and/or continuous snow could delay this sweeping. The city does not sweep residential streets after snowstorms but will attempt to sweep all residential streets once between February and March depending on snow accumulation.

What can you do to help

  • Please do not rake or blow leaves, branches or grass into the street. It is very difficult to sweep and can cause damage to the city equipment.
  • Trim trees and shrubs to a height of 14 feet above the street surface to avoid damaging equipment and trees/shrubs. The street sweepers will sweep around low hanging branches.
  • Trim shrubs and other vegetation back from the concrete curb. The street sweepers will sweep around any vegetation that overhangs the curb and is in the gutter area.
  • Please remove all vehicles from the street during your scheduled week. The street sweepers will sweep around any vehicles that are left on the street.
  • When driving keep a safe distance away from the sweeper

Your assistance will help keep streets and neighborhoods clean, prevent debris from washing into streams, and make the streets sweeping program a success!
