Alley Maintenance

Alley Maintenance Action Plan

The City has been divided into five (5) maintenance areas. Each year, all alleys in one of the five maintenance areas are graded and a soil stabilizer & dust-suppressant material is applied. The following map shows the five different alley maintenance areas.

2025 Alley Maintenance

Starting in May, this project involves grading and applying a layer of asphalt millings to various alleys indicated on the project map. It's important to note that the map serves as an estimate, and there is no guarantee that all marked alleys will be completed. The number of alleys finished will depend on several factors, including the remaining budget, production speed and weather conditions.

Short-Term Efforts

Goal: Grade alleys to make them passable to traffic by filling potholes & ruts. A 50/50 mix of asphalt millings and roadbase is applied where necessary to help prevent future potholes and rutting. This work is typically completed by City crews. Each alley in the City is inspected annually to determine specific needs.

Timeline: As needed.

Long-Term Efforts

Goal: Grade alleys to improve drainage by performing fine/detailed grading to create a defined "v" channel cross section that creates a flowline down the center of the alley and allows water to drain out of the alley to the nearest cross street. This is followed by application of a soil stabilization and dust-suppressant material to help prevent erosion. Alleys that are subject to more severe erosion are also surfaced with asphalt millings or roadbase. In extreme cases, a rock channel is installed down the center of the alley in certain sections to help prevent erosion. Overhanging vegetation is also trimmed as part of this work to make the alley passable to all vehicles. This work is typically completed by a contractor hired by the city.

Timeline: Annually per the following schedule.
