Police Reform Task Force

In the spring of 2020, the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota prompted police departments across the nation to review their processes and protocols to deal with racial bias and general use of force. The Englewood Police Department and the City of Englewood have a strong history of community engagement, as well as internal training programs designed to ensure that officers were effectively trained.

Englewood Mayor Linda Olson took the Reimagining Police Pledge, which calls for mayors and local officials in the United States of America to review and reform use of force policies, redefine public safety and combat systemic racism within law enforcement. The City Council and Police Chief John Collins affirmed this pledge during the Englewood City Council meeting on June 10, 2020. This pledge led to the development of several informational reports, an expert panel on policing, public engagement sessions and culminated with the establishment of a Police Reform Taskforce.

The recommendations of the taskforce are not to be viewed as the endpoint, but rather a key milestone in ensuring that the Englewood Police Department continues to hold itself to high standards, both in terms of internal training, policies and procedures and how that internal preparation ensures that the department engages with and assists the members of the Englewood community in a fair and unbiased manner.
