The City of Englewood is seeking a passionate artist to transform the east wall of the Malley Recreation Center’s fitness room into a vibrant, welcoming landmark. The theme of this mural will be Aspen trees representing resilience, unity and collective strength.

Compensation 

The artist will receive $16,500 for their design and to cover necessary mural supplies for installation.  

Project 

The end result of this project will be mural located on the east wall of the Malley Recreation Center’s fitness room. This mural will showcase the theme of Aspen trees. The wall is approximately 47 ft. long and 20 ft. tall. 

Artist Responsibilities 

• Paint and installation supplies
• Mural to be sealed with an anti-graffiti sealant once completed
• Be available for repairs as necessary

Eligibility 

• Artists must live in Colorado.
• Artists must have images demonstrating past mural experience.

This project celebrates the spirit of the Malley Recreation Center community through a vibrant depiction of Aspen trees which are a symbol of collective strength and interconnectedness. Much like an Aspen grove, which shares a single root system, our community thrives through unity, mutual support and transformation. 

The goal is to brighten the fitness area with a colorful, welcoming atmosphere that honors the center’s history while offering a fresh, modern perspective.  

Selection Process & Requirements 

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from local artists. For the initial phase, artists are required to submit: 

• Description of why the artist is interested in this project.
• A link to their portfolio showcasing relevant past work and artistic style.

Selection Timeline

• Phase 1 (January 26 through February 4): The Cultural Arts Commission and city staff will review portfolios and select three finalists.
• Phase 2 (February 5 through February 22): The three finalists will create a formal concept drawing and artist statement.
• Final Selection (March 4 through March 20): One winning design will be chosen for installation in the Malley Recreation Center fitness area. The public will be invited to participate in the final selection.
  

Guidelines & Considerations 

• Creative Vision: Varied styles, mediums, and artistic interpretations are welcomed. We are looking for a "fresh way" to view the classic Aspen motif.
• Environment: The final design must be suitable for a high-traffic fitness environment.
• Content: No overtly political or provocative mural themes will be considered. Mural concepts created with AI will not be considered.

Selection Requirements 

The City of Englewood will review artist submissions based on artistic merit, creativity and use of theme.
