July is Smart Irrigation Month, and Englewood is encouraging residents to use water wisely as drought conditions continue. Small actions by everyone can help ensure a reliable water supply for our community, this summer and for years to come.
Tips to Help You Water Wisely:
- Watch the clock. Water early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler and winds are calm to reduce evaporation.
- Adjust after rainfall. Skip or reduce watering after rain and avoid overwatering. Water deeply but less often to help your turf grow deeper roots.
- Play the zone. Separate your yard into irrigation zones so grass, shrubs, and trees each get the right amount of water.
- Cycle and soak: Divide you total watering time into shorter timeframes (cycles), separated by 30 to 60 minutes (soaks) to help the water soak in deeply and not run off.
- Pull out the Hose. Hand water small and more isolated areas.
- Get a smart irrigation controller. It will help you keep to your watering schedule, skip cycles when it rains, cycle/soak and water each zone sufficiently. Essentially, the MVP of Smart Irrigation Month.
- Inspect your sprinkler heads regularly. At least once a month, check that heads pop up fully and are aimed at your lawn, not sidewalks or pavement.
- Fix leaks at joints and valves. Check connections inside valve boxes and look for pooling water between cycles, which can signal an underground leak.
