A World of Connection: Englewood’s Sister City Partnership with Belm, Germany

Post Date:05/26/2026

What started as a professional exchange nearly two decades ago has grown into something much more personal.

Englewood’s sister city relationship with Belm, Germany, began in 2006 and was formalized in 2007. In recent years, the focus has shifted toward something even more meaningful: giving students the chance to experience the world firsthand.

In 2025, six Englewood High School students jetted off to Germany for Spring Break. These students were matched with peers in Belm. As they traveled across western Germany and into Amsterdam, they experienced daily life in a new culture, not as tourists, but as guests. The kindness and generosity they encountered left a lasting impression.

The experience came full circle in March 2026, when Englewood welcomed the same students to Colorado. Families opened their homes, and the community came together to return that same sense of connection.

What began as a cultural exchange has grown into something deeper. Students build confidence, expand their perspective and form friendships that continue long after the trip ends.

During the trip to Englewood, Belm delegates and students helped plant the first new tree in Barde Park as part of the Renew & Recreate campaign. An Heritage Oak was chosen as a nod to the Sister City, as oak trees are very prevalent in Germany. This steadfast oak stands as a permanent connection between the two cities, as it grows so will the bonds of future students.

The partnership with Belm is not just about travel. It is about connection, learning and seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.
