Make Every Drop Count
After a historically low snowfall in Colorado this winter, the ongoing drought conditions remind us that water in the west is precious and every drop counts. While Englewood is not implementing mandatory outdoor watering restrictions at this time, the city is encouraging residents to use water wisely. In an effort to help conserve water this summer, residents are being asked to water no more than three times per week, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to reduce evaporation.
Tips to Help You Conserve Water
- Water smarter, not more: Get/set a smart irrigation controller to maintain the voluntary three times per week schedule. Watering less trains your turf to be tough and grow deeper roots.
- Skip watering when it’s rainy or windy: Install a rain/freeze sensor to automatically skip a cycle when needed.
- Check your system: Take a few minutes to assess your irrigation system, fix leaks and align your sprinkler heads to avoid watering sidewalks and driveways.
- Upgrade your irrigation: Add more efficient rotary heads for lawns and drip irrigation for everything else (trees, shrubs and gardens).
- Mow grass higher: Raise mowing blades to keep grass at 3–4 inches tall to shade soil, reduce evaporation and retain moisture.
- Choose Colorado native and adapted plants and replace turf wherever you can. Get ideas here. Englewood is a proud WaterSense partner.
