South Platte Renew (SPR) completed construction on the Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) System in October 2019, the first system of its kind in Colorado. This cutting-edge system converts biogas generated from the water renewal process into pipeline-quality RNG that is injected into Xcel Energy’s natural gas pipeline. Since becoming operational, the system has generated approximately $11 Million in total revenues through RNG production.
In July of this year, five and a half years after startup, the system has fully recovered the initial capital investment of $7.8 Million. This investment was jointly financed by the Cities of Englewood and Littleton through their Sewer Funds. Starting in August 2025, SPR will begin generating positive revenue that will offset sewer treatment rates for ratepayers in Englewood, Littleton and 19 other connecting sanitary sewer districts in the southwest metro area. SPR is proud to announce this major milestone was achieved one and a half years ahead of the originally estimated seven-year payback timeframe.
Biogas is a natural byproduct of the wastewater treatment process that is composed of methane and carbon dioxide. Prior to 2019, virtually all of this gas was flared into the environment, resulting in significant greenhouse gas emissions. In an effort to increase sustainability and reduce these harmful emissions, SPR’s RNG System offers an innovative, industry-leading solution. By capturing and converting biogas into renewable fuel, SPR has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 3,700 Metric Tons of carbon dioxide per year. This is equivalent to a car driving nearly nine million miles annually. Between startup in October of 2019 and May of 2025, SPR has offset the emissions of almost 54 million car miles – nearly the distance from Earth to Mars!
Entering the next phase of revenue generation, SPR remains committed to continuous improvement and ensuring the long-term value of this investment. SPR will continue generating annual revenue estimated at $2 million. SPR will also continue enhancing the efficiency of the RNG System by reducing operating costs, maximizing output and minimizing energy consumption to provide maximum value to customers.
