ENGLEWOOD, CO – The City of Englewood has been named a finalist for the 2025 All-America City Award, a national honor from the National Civic League that recognizes communities working together to solve local challenges.

Englewood was selected for its efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability through projects that encourage community participation. The city’s application focused on three areas:

• Making sustainability programs more accessible to residents
• Building partnerships with nonprofits, schools and neighboring cities
• Improving transportation options that are safer and more connected

“These are the kinds of efforts that bring a city together,” said Mayor Othoniel Sierra. “We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, and it’s even more meaningful knowing that it came from people working side by side to improve our community.”

The city’s application highlights recent work to reach and engage more residents in environmental programs. In the past year, Englewood staff connected with residents in mobile home parks to better understand local energy needs as well as climate resiliency vulnerabilities. More than 30 people took part in climate resiliency workshops designed to identify community-based solutions, and 33 local businesses are now participating in the city’s new Sustainable Business Partnership program.

“We’re working to make sure everyone has a chance to help shape the future of our city,” said Mel Englund, Sustainability Program Manager. “These programs are successful because they were built by listening to the people who are most affected and giving them real opportunities to lead.”

Doug Linkhart, President of the National Civic League, praised this year’s finalists, saying, “Communities thrive when all residents have a voice in the policies and decisions that shape their lives. This year’s finalists are leading the way by removing barriers to participation and implementing programs that foster sustainability, resilience, and inclusive engagement.”

Finalists from around the country will travel to Denver this June to share their stories at the All-America City Awards event. The gathering includes workshops, presentations and performances that highlight how each community is making a difference.

The All-America City Award has been recognizing civic achievement since 1949. Cities that receive the honor often see a boost in local pride, stronger partnerships, and national visibility for their work.
