Dear Englewood community,
On Tuesday, July 24, a severe storm hit Arapahoe County with much of the damage concentrated in and around the City of Englewood. The damage and loss to life, homes, property, personal belongings, and much more is truly tragic. There is much work to be done to restore this city back to its vibrant, small-knit condition that we all know and love. We are especially encouraged and proud of many citizens who are tirelessly volunteering their efforts and time to help and support those who are in need.
As the City of Englewood, we also have responsibility to clean up and repair the public infrastructure of this city as efficiently and effectively as possible. More importantly, we aim to keep an open line of communication with you as best as we can during a time like this.
Today, we want to provide you with an initial update on the current state of the city, what we are planning to address in the future, and to answer some questions that have been frequently asked.

Public Works, Parks, Streets, and other city departments and crews have been in the neighborhoods assessing the damage and addressing pressing issues that the storm left behind. This includes examining our infrastructure to ensure that roads, bridges, and storm drains are back to being functional as soon as possible. In addition, city staff have been connecting and collaborating with state and federal agencies to address what options we have for potential additional support and funding. Other city staff and departments have been collaborating with community partners such as Xcel and local community groups to help citizens find solutions that do not fall under city jurisdiction or coordinate efforts for engaging and dispatching volunteer help.
On Wednesday, July 25, the City verbally declared a disaster and then signed a resolution declaring a local disaster on Thursday, July 26. The declaration allows the city to work with Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to determine the eligibility for recovery assistance.
One recovery program is a loan interest loan program managed by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Representatives from the city, state and SBA will be conducting damage assessments of each impacted home and business to determine eligibility for the community.
Homeowners and businesses can assist with the process by being available to speak to officials as they conduct the door-to-door assessments to discuss property and economic damages and verify insurance coverage.
City departments and crews will continue to do the work they are currently doing to make sure that public streets, alleys and right of ways are cleared and cleaned up as soon as possible. We will continue to provide updates to any federal disaster relief to public property and private property.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: I have a downed tree branch on my sidewalk/in front of my house, what should I do?
A. Residents are responsible for picking up and disposing of tree limbs and branches on personal property, including sidewalks. Englewood residents can dispose of tree branches between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. every day through August 3 at the ServiCenter, 2800 South Platte River Drive (the old Humane Society Site). Trees and branches from arborists/tree removal companies will not be accepted.
City of Englewood crews will continue to clear branches from the public streets.
Q: There is a washed out alley. How is this being addressed?
A. Alleys and other streets are being assessed for damage by the Public Works Streets division. Grading and repairs will take place as soon as weather and resources permit. Contact the Public Works Department (303-762-2500) if you know of a street or alley that should be examined, and we will do our best to address this as soon as possible.
Q: There is debris on the streets. What is being done to clear this?
A: Street sweepers are working as quickly as possible to clear the streets. Citizens are encouraged to sweep gutters and sidewalks to prevent additional debris from entering into the stormwater system.
Q: There is a tree limb hanging from neighbor’s tree over my property. What should I do?
A: Cutting and disposing of tree limbs on personal property is the responsibility of residents. Connect with your neighbor first to notify them of the limb over your property and agree who will cut and dispose of the limb. You may call Code Enforcement to ensure right to cut limb hanging over onto your property (303) 762-2335.
The City does not pick up limbs or trees from private property unless they are from a tree on adjacent City Property. Q: There is a storm drain plugged. What is being done to clear them?
A. City crews have been out clearing streets as well as storm drains since the night of the storm and will continue to do so until they are certain the infrastructure is functional. Citizens may clear the drains or wait until city crews are able to address this issue. Please take caution and err on the side of safety.
Q: My basement is flooded. Who do I contact?
A: Contact your insurance company and inform them of your situation. Your company will provide next steps. In addition, private flood and water damage companies will need to be contracted by the homeowner to address the issue.

Q: What do I do I don’t have flood insurance?
A: Unfortunately, this is the homeowner’s responsibility. We encourage you to check with your insurance agent to determine exactly what is covered. Representatives from the city, state and SBA will be conducting damage assessments of impacted home and business to determine eligibility for the community.

Q: My power went out. What happened? What do I do?
A: Xcel is in charge of electricity issues. We suggest finding someone with access to the internet to report your outage online at https://www.xcelenergy.com/outages_and_emergencies, or call 1-800-895-1999.
For safety reasons, Xcel may have turned your power off. Prior to Xcel turning the power back on within homes that have had flood damage, the Englewood Building Department will need to perform a safety inspection. The Building Department can be contacted at 303-762-2357.
Q: Why haven’t we heard from or seen anyone from the City?
A: The City of Englewood is out in the streets assessing damage and finding solutions to get this city back up and running. Many employees are not in their office to answer or respond to emails and phone calls as usual. Thank you for your patience.
